The other day on a repeat of Martha she had a segment on kitchen gadgets. The audience all had some of their favorite gadgets as well as Martha showing some of her newest finds. She also had a peg wall that was made to house all of them, the peg wall system made famous by Julia Child when her husband Paul created the system for her.
I have a ton of kitchen gadgets, whisks in many sizes, brushes, graters, spatulas, etc, etc etc, My Aunt told me once that a girl can never have too many spatulas, and I agree!
I keep some of my tools in large crocks, I love my Le Creuset crocks and had to add some Martha Stewart ones as well. I have 6 crocks and separate all of the like items for easy grabbing, wooden spoons, Martha blue and green spatulas, whisks, spoons and tongs, red silicone spatulas & spoons and then a large one filled with fish spatulas, graters, ladles, etc. It works really well and there is no time wasted looking for things.
Somebody came to our house one day and said it looked like a cooking show set. I guess I have a lot of tools.... Smaller things are all kept in a drawer. I have 5 sets of measuring spoons and cups because nothing is worse then having to look for or clean one in the middle of cooking. And of course there are lots of pastry and cake tools as well. They also have there own home.
Maybe having Martha Stewart and Julia Child as role models have created a monster in me, but you can never go wrong having the correct tool for the job. Here are more of my favorites.
A Spider or Asian strainer. Martha loves this one and that is where I saw it for the first time. Back then you could only buy them in Asian markets. Asian markets are a great place to find neat gadgets
Citrus Press, this hand held little beauty is a must have. I originally found one of these at Williams Sonoma and loved it so much it was a must have gift that I gave for years to everybody. Now I also have a pretty Martha blue one as well
And for those big juicing jobs, a Citrus Juicer I LOVE this thing. I had wanted one for a while and then Martha made one for Macy's and I had to get it. When you need a lot of lemon juice this is a breeze. Great for those harder lemons that are a little more difficult to get the juice out in a hand held.
A Micro-plane grater, perfect for zesting. Martha originally had a wood rasp that she used for this and then it eventually became a kitchen tool. The very fine teeth make it a indispensable gadget
These Multicolored paring knives from Williams Sonoma are small but pack a punch. Very sharp and easy to handle and they have a nice little cover which makes a great knife for packing in a picnic
I could go on forever on this subject..... what are your favorite kitchen gadgets. It may just win you a brand new Martha Stewart gadget.....
